Rapid bridge replacement over high-volume arterial highway corridors.
Reconstruction of a critical six-lane highway interchange, including twin precast prestressed concrete girder overpasses, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls, and complex storm drainage culverts carrying over 110,000 vehicles daily.
Maintaining regional commuter traffic flow required minimizing lane closures and completing all bridge superstructure placements within strictly restricted weekend shutdown windows established by the department of transportation.
Accelerated bridge construction using self-propelled modular transporter roll-ins.
Utilized accelerated bridge construction (ABC) methodologies with self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT). Both 180-foot bridge deck superstructures were fully prefabricated in an adjacent off-line staging yard complete with barrier rails, stay-in-place formwork, and utility conduits while bridge substructure abutments were poured in place.
During scheduled 54-hour weekend closures, SPMT multi-axle trailers lifted the complete bridge decks, navigated the highway alignment, and lowered each span onto elastomeric bearing pads with millimeter positioning accuracy.
Months of lane closures condensed into weekend operations with zero lost-time incidents.
Pre-building bridge spans off-alignment condensed months of intermittent lane closures into single weekend operations, substantially reducing regional commuter delays and construction zone traffic risks.
Time elapsed from highway closure to full bridge span placement. Reduction in total commuter detour hours compared to cast-in-place baselines. Safe work hours logged with a sub-1.0 total recordable incident rate
